Jenny Park ’18
The equestrian team competed at the UMass/Westfield State Horse Show this weekend at Hadley Farm. The Smith team brought home a total of 17 ribbons from the show, with an impressive 13 ribbons in the top four. Among the seasoned standouts in the Walk, Trot Canter Equitation Division were Deidre Sullivan ’19, who won the first section, and Elisbeth Pendleton Wheeler ’19, who finished second in the other section. Many novices also placed highly in other divisions. In the Beginner Walk, Trot Canter class, Charlotte Berg ’18 won first place, and Kalia Temple ’18 placed second. At the Novice Equitation on the Flat, Julia Greider ’16 won second place with Natalie Smith ’16 following at third place. Propelled by these and other wins, the Pioneers placed third among nine collegiate teams at the show.
The tennis team opened up its spring 2016 season with a solid 9-0 victory against Curry College. Captain Samantha Peikes ’18 and Joanna Kim ’19 won No. 1 doubles with an 8-1 victory. No. 2 doubles, Morgan Barney ’19 and Sarah Cassidy-Seyoum ’16, won with a score of 8-2, and No. 3 doubles, Janan Fugel ’19 and Alexandra Steck ’17, won with 8-3 victories. Players in singles also performed excellently, with Noa Dubin ’19 at No. 1, Peikes at No. 2, Kim at No. 4 and Fugel at No. 5, winning perfect 6-0 matches. The tennis team is set to host Regis on March 20.
Swimming and Diving
A trio of divers of the Smith swimming and diving team competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Division III Diving Championship hosted by Wellesley College on Feb. 26 and 27. At the three-meter Diving Regional, Anna Partridge ’16 finished sixth with 439.65 points, improving her score by 14.15 points from the previous year’s regional. In the same event, Elly Stone ’18 finished in 10th with a total of 425.10 points, and CeCe Arrison ’16 increased her score 90.95 points from the last season to finish 11th with 418.45 points. At the one-meter Diving Regional, Arrison qualified for the first time in her athletic career to compete at the NCAA National Championship Meet by finishing fourth place with a score of 425.35 points. Also in the one-meter Diving Regional, Stone finished seventh place with 418.60 points, and Partridge took 12th place with a score of 387.05.
Track and Field
Two members of the Smith track and field team competed at the All-Division, Open New England Championships at Boston University this weekend. Five hundred-meter runner Meadeshia Mitchell ’16 completed the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:22.17. Zoe Rubinstein ’18 finished in fourth place among Division III competitors and 16th overall in the pole vault. In doing so, she bested her season record with a score of 11-03.75. Rubinstein and the 4×200 relay team will compete next weekend at the ECAC Championships.
