Pioneer soccer triumphed over Clark University, Saturday afternoon at Granger Soccer Field. The nail-biting match ended in overtime, when sophomore, Jordan Houston, scored the game-winning goal. The game was tied at one when Houston converted her “golden goal” winner. It came at 4:55 into the first overtime, when sophomore, Gigi Ross played a through ball to Houston who fired a shot that banged off the crossbar and over the line. The goalie grabbed the ball, leaving it unclear whether or not the goal would be counted. Said Houston, “When the ref called the goal I was really caught off guard. I was really excited because it was the first time I have ever scored with my left foot.” Jordan has greatly improved this season, already doubling her goal count of last season, from two up to five thus far. She proved to be a real weapon Saturday scoring both goals while securing Smith’s first win in the NEWMAC. Commenting on her game success Jordan states, “I couldn’t have done it without the great assist from Gigi, and the hard work from the rest of my team.”

While moving towards the NEWMAC finals the Pioneers are off to a strong start. The team is predominately underclassmen, with only four seniors and two juniors, so they continue to focus on strengthening their team play. Houston is hopeful when explaining the team dynamic, “I’m excited for the rest of our season. After recruiting six new first years, I think we are a stronger team this year.” Smith’s overall record for the season stands at 3-2-1. The Pioneers host their next game, this Wednesday, against Westfield State. Game time is 4 PM.
